Reflection; Jing Ern

When I know that social engagement is a compulsory course for all undergraduates, I feel happy because I can contribute something to society. After the briefing about Social Engagement, I was informed that I was in Group 13 and I went through the name list, I realized that I didn’t recognize almost all of my teammates. We have our first time meeting after discussion with my group members, but on that time just a few of us attend the meeting and we have discussed some plans like going to an orphanage, teaching the children at PPUM and few more but to no avail. After that, we combined with Group 14 and we plan to do a camp named “Youth Attack” at a secondary school. We try very hard for the process of finding schools for doing our camp and at last SMK Shah Alam allowed us to do the camp. We have planned all the activities that we are going to do during the 3 days camp. For me, I am the person in charge of Let’s Debate session with my partner, Mahjoube. After our discussion, we separate into a few groups for the fundraising. For the fundraising, we went for Pudu area to raise money from the public and succeeded to raise the fund more than our target. We also have few meeting on the weeks before we going to the school to have some explanation of our activity, test the game also learned the Zumba dances. On the day before our event day, we also have a short rehearsal of our activities throughout the three days.

One the first day which is 5 April, we reached there at about 1130a.m., we start to do preparation for our registration site and do some survey on the venues at SMK Shah Alam. We started our registration after the Friday Prayer and continue with the ice breaking session. During the ice breaking session, I can feel their excitement about this camp. They get touch with each other after this session too. After that, I am assigned to be a facilitator. Actually, this is the first time I being a facilitator and I learned a lot and I can feel their spirit during the event day. After that, we have some tentative programmes like Interview Tips, Interview Stimulation which teaches some useful skills and ways about an interview for the students. Besides, we also have a mock interview for all the participants. Since I am the person in charge of Let’s Debate, I give the instructions for all of them and let them draw for the debate’s title to prepare for debate session on the next day.

On the second day, after our breakfast, we started the Zumba dance session. Every one of us danced together happily on that morning and we continue with Journey After SPM session which we will give some advice and tell them our experiences after SPM. after that, that is Let’s Debate session, my partner and I conduct on this activity and all of the participants are like very quick-tongued in their arguments. During the night, that is the Teatro De Suenos session. I am very glad to become the judge for this session and I enjoyed the theatre performances by all the participants. They performed according to the themes they get, some of the groups act as a comedy and some act as real life. For the third day, we have the Go Green session that promotes students to make good use of the recycled items. The participants use their creativeness to create a custom by using recycled items provided. All of the group successfully to make amazing custom and having the fashion show by wearing the custom they did. After that, that is the closing ceremony of our events. Time flies, I feel unbelievable that our event already until the end, and I am so sad that we need to farewell with the participants.

From the 3 days 2 night camp at SMK Shah Alam, I learned a lot thing because this is my first time to be one of the committees to held a camp. Thus, this is such a memorable experience for me. I learned how to be a good leader, how to be work in groups, how to organize a camp and improved my communication skills with others. Besides, I have learned to solve the obstacles that I faced during the planning of events. After this, I will be participating in such volunteering activities more actively that may help more people because this is my responsibility to contribute to society.
