During preparation for the project I was feeling a bit of a stranger who doesn’t belong to this group because I didn’t know anyone there as I am an international student and most of them were locals and also because I joined the group late after they have decided on their project and everyone knew their position, therefore I wasn’t really active during the meetings they had conducted.
Throughout the three days of the project I started with the same feeling but thanks to some of our group members that tried to engage me in the group I managed to communicate with some of them, even though not many, but that was satisfying. The team members were kind to me, as I couldn’t take care of the slot I was responsible of because I don’t speak Malay language, but as we are a team, others helped me handle it (or they mostly handled it). The games and the activities that were conducted during the project were fun and useful for the SMK shah alam students as well as for us.
This project, first, gave me the chance to know how Malaysian people are nice, friendly and helpful and how much they are active and committed to their responsibilities. It helped me to change the stereotype image that I had of them and taught me to never judge others before knowing them. Second, as an introvert person who never engage in social activities, this project has shown me the importance of the social activities and services in addition to how I can benefit others from what I know and what I do. Lastly, I have learnt that relationships are built through social activities and community engagement, they can shape your connections.
